Define Hinduism
I came to see a question in an orkut community called "Hinduism"...which had set of questions longer than my SSLC question paper..and i answered that too..
And posting the same as my first post in my Blog..
I am not sure how usefull my answers will be...as Hinduism is very vast(and little bit confusing :) ). It takes lot of effort and time to explain them...soo
i am just putting some crux of what it is...
At the same time i cannot endorse the authenticity of my replies...as i am not a qualified hindu...but a Hindu. So, i have given what i know and what i have seen..
Is there a qulaification of being Hindu?
-> mate first thing, qualification is only for the people who practise hinduism(karma, dharma, samsara, moksha and yoga)...even without practising them u can claim urself as hindu by devoting/accepting any hindu god :)
Is there a process code to be followed
- > All the 5 themes which i have specified above cover entire hinduism, at the same time there is no essential requirement for u to follow them ;) this is the liberty u have in hinduism(it is freedom of choice rather than liberty)
What if some one does not follow a procedures
-> my second one answers this one too..( i mean freedom of choice)
How many marriages are allowed?
-> hinduism was interpreted in many ways over the course of time by many set of people(this is the consequence of independence given)..but there is no written scriptures about that...in overall time/period hinduism was regulated a lot...like eradicating sati...dowri...and many religious followings...eventhough they are not completely..but to an extent we have regulated them....
As i said...there is no written scriptures on number of marriages...but there are myths about God's having many wives...(again "Myth")
Is divorcing anti Hindusim?
-> Again this is another form of interpretation....hinduism tells only about the commitment, mutual understanding and respect between each other...
in that sense divorcing is not an anti-hindu..("interpretation")
What will happen if a Hindu marries a non Hindu girl or otherwise?
-> Nothing....basically Hinduism is a peacefull religion...and we dont seriously enforce religious conversion nor against anyother religion doing soo...
unlike muslim's claim non muslims as kaffir and christians claim non christians as satan's :)
When do you become a Hindu?
-> By Birth..
When do you get the religious teaching?
-> instead of when....u shud be asking why? it again depends on one's interest if i want to lead a normal life..like birth->marriage->kids-> death then i belong to theme "samsaara"
if i want to attain "moksha" (i will giveup "samsaara")... like wise it is a big question paper with choice of answers(fortunately any answer u choose from the choice is correct)
soo there is no teaching as such...instead we call as practise on ones interests..
see how much freedom u have... ;-)
Why does one adopt Hinduism in life ( or for that matter any other religion?)
-> Peace...Hinduism is the only religion ( i mean "religion") which is peacefull....
if u condradict my point....u shud read first few basic concepts of islam and christianity..then u will understand them automatically...
Do I have to be neccessarily vegetarian?
-> No....again independence in our religion lets u too be vegetarian or non-vegetarian...or 50-50, 25-75, 65-35 etc...bla bla bla...
Which God do I worship?
-> In hinduism u can be devoted to one single god...at the same time accepting other God as God..
Is daily prayer a must?
-> Again the varna(integral part of themes) u choose matters..here..
What if I pray to Lord of other religion as well?
-> by accepting hindu lords as a god,then fine. But devoted completely to other religion's God..and not accepting Hindu Lord as God...then that is called religious conversion
Do I have to wear tilak?
-> "independence"..not mandatory..
What does tilak signify?
-> (Who said?...there is no significancy....u feel better and comfortable...or may not be...it varies per se. )
I was kidding.. But there are different interpretation among sub-groups inside hinduism (i mean the God'd they devote too Vishnu, Siva, etc..,)..but not mandatory for all..
Why do Hindus dont wear the "choti" anymore? What did it signify?
-> I didnot get u... :P
Is telling a lie allowed?
-> Yes, if lieing is for good cause...our religion allows that too..
Is killing people allowed and when?
-> Yes, depends on the person who u r gonna kill...and people who kill bad ones come under subgroup of dharma(varna-> Kshatriyas: warriors)
Who is authority in case of conflict of ideas?
-> there is no point of authority here...cos giving authority to a human induces corruption...domination...and etc...etc...
yes we have a supreme authority, not one..but many..which are veda's....
Who is responsible for keeping this relisgion dynamic?
-> "Humans"
Therefore I need to know what is the minimum set of common things in Hinuds?
-> You can take advice from any hindu preasts who practises the Hindu Themes religiously...but not me :P
And here is the link...if possible you can also define "Hinduism" on your own interpretation...
